Acer campestre 'Huibers Elegant'

Acer campestre 'Huibers Elegant'

Huibers Elegant field maple

Description

Acer campestre ‘Huibers Elegant’ (‘Huibers Elegant’ field Maple) is a selection marketed in 1992 by Gelderse Boomhandel BV in Opheusden, the Netherlands. The cultivar was named after Huibers, the director and owner. It is a tree about 10 metres high and about 6 metres wide, with initially a narrow egg-shaped and later a wide egg-shaped crown. This makes ‘Huibers Elegant’ a perfect street tree for a narrower profile.

In April, the ‘Huibers Elegant’ field maple blooms yellow-green corymbs, with a nectar and pollen value of 5. During that time, bees, butterflies and other insects are strongly drawn to the tree. The palmate, lobate leaves bud dark green and turn a lovely golden yellow in autumn. The bark is grey-brown and forms slight furrows at an older age.

Acer campestre ‘Huibers Elegant’ is perfect for use in both urban and landscape planting. In contrast to many other cultivars of Acer campestre, ‘Huibers Elegant’ does quite well in sealed pavement. It is a tough species that can handle strong (coastal) winds, heat, drought, air pollution and salt spray. With 5A winterhardiness, the cultivar is furthermore perfect for climate planting. Acer campestre ‘Huibers Elegant’ has few requirements of its soil and environment.
