Styphnolobium japonicum 'Regent'

Styphnolobium japonicum 'Regent'

Regent Japanese pagoda tree

synonym Sophora japonica 'Regent'

Description

Styphnolobium japonicum ‘Regent’ is a cultivar of the Japanese pagoda tree selected for its strong, regular growth and a sturdy, straight trunk. This avenue tree selection was introduced to the trade in 1964 by Princeton Nurseries in the United States. The tree reaches a height of twelve to fifteen meters and a width of eight to ten meters. Its characteristic crown is fairly transparent and rounded.

Flowering, which is the main ornamental feature of the pagoda tree, takes place around August and September and begins at a relatively young age in this cultivar, at about ten years old. This is approximately ten years earlier than in the species. The flowers resemble those of the species and consist of upright panicles up to thirty centimeters long with creamy white flowers. They are extremely rich in nectar and therefore highly attractive to bees. After flowering, distinctive fleshy pods develop. The finely pinnate foliage is blue green and firmer in texture than that of the species. In autumn it turns light yellow. On young specimens of Styphnolobium japonicum ‘Regent’, the lenticels on the green twigs are about twice as large and fewer in number.

The tree has modest soil requirements and tolerates all soils except very poor, acidic or waterlogged conditions. Air pollution, paving and to a certain extent road salt are well tolerated, making this cultivar particularly suitable for urban environments. The relatively transparent crown provides pleasant, light shade, making it an excellent choice for wide streets and large squares where shade is desired without creating excessive darkness. The cultivar ‘Regent’ ceases growth earlier in autumn, which reduces susceptibility to fungal diseases. As a young and vigorous tree, Styphnolobium japonicum ‘Regent’ benefits from careful formative pruning to maintain good structure and balance.
