Trees in containers

More and more trees are being planted in containers in urban environments. Trees in containers offer a solution where there is no space for tree roots underground, such as on parking roofs or streets with wide cabling and piping. But trees in containers also offer a solution for decoration of 'bare' open spaces or event sites. When choosing the species of tree for a container, the location, growing conditions and maintenance provision naturally need to be taken into account. Planting in containers in the urban environment is a valuable addition which improves the microclimate. The right trees, management and maintenance measures are important factors for trees in containers.

The right tree

Almost every type of tree can be planted on roofs and in containers but some types are more suitable than others. For example, the shape makes a difference: standard trees are less suitable than multi-stem or topiary trees. Standard trees have a much higher centre of gravity, which increases the risk that they will blow over or break. If a large branch breaks the crown will be affected and the damage will almost always be visible. Topiary trees are less heavy as the crown is pruned back every year. If a branch breaks from a topiary tree crown, the damage will be repaired by the next year. The planting advisors at Ebben Nurseries will be happy to help you in your choice of species.

Planting and management

Planting and management

Trees in containers face more extreme conditions. In containers, the growth space is also very limited and a good substrate with added nutrients and water is indispensable. Of course the budget for maintenance is important when choosing trees on roofs or in containers. A tree on a roof or in a container lives in unique conditions and requires more maintenance than a tree in open ground.

Multi-stem container and roof trees

Multi-stem container and roof trees

Multi-stem trees are the most suitable trees for roofs and containers. The centre of gravity on multi-stem trees is much lower, due to the weight of the multiple stems. In the case of wind damage to the crown, the tree retains its characteristic multi-stem shape. There is also much more to see at eye level with a multi-stem tree, so that the experience is much greater. There are many different kinds, shapes and sizes of multi-stem trees.
