Squares are the central meeting places in cities. They are resting places in the maze of streets and buildings in the urban environment and form the landmarks of cities and villages. Thanks to their characteristic form, colour, structure and size, trees and other plants make a major contribution to the experience, identity and use of these squares. They determine the atmosphere and appearance, offering users a relaxed and shady place to recharge. Functionally, greenery also provides an important structural element in the design.

Modular use of trees

Modular use of trees

Because squares are a central meeting place, you often have to deal with a place which is used for several purposes. As a result, the use of multi-stem trees is often inconvenient when an event is held in the square. Therefore, in the design of squares it is appropriate to bear in mind modular forms for using planting. For example, consider trees in containers, which can be moved for the weekly market, or high trees, which form a roof over the square, but also occupy little space.

Schoolyards are an important type of square in our society. These squares, which are often mainly paved and thus ‘low-maintenance’, leave little space for discovery and learning through play. By using elements such as climbing trees and food forests we restore nature to education. With these, schools can also start to have outdoor lessons, with children themselves caring for the plants in the schoolyard. In this way children develop a sense of responsibility and learn about the wonders of nature.

Shady terraces

Shady terraces

Many squares are laid out for hospitality businesses to use as a terrace. However, because of the increasingly hot summers, the largest part is covered over with parasols. Nature has a solution here in the form of trees. In winter and large parts of the spring and autumn the trees are bare, and so you can enjoy the sun on the terrace. On the other hand, the trees with their canopy offer sufficient shade on hot summer days. In addition, water evaporates via the foliage of the trees, which means that it is cooler under trees than under a parasol. This makes the squares more attractive not only in terms of temperature but also visually, and you are giving nature a helping hand.

Growing environment

Squares are not the easiest growing environments for trees; certainly when the beds consist only of underground growing systems and tree grates. This growing environment can be compared with a concrete platform which gets very hot, reflects light and where water runs off. As a result, the trees in these locations may have to cope with scorching and drying out. Pioneer varieties, for example, which are naturally found on (southern) rocky slopes, are resistant to these more extreme conditions.
