Tilia americana 'Nova'

Tilia americana 'Nova'

Nova American Linden

Description

Tilia americana ‘Nova’ is a cultivar of the American linden that originated in the Netherlands or Germany in the 1950s. The tree reaches a mature height of approximately twenty to twenty five meters and a width of fifteen to twenty meters. American linden ‘Nova’ develops a broadly ovate, semi open crown with a strong central leader and lateral branches that spread gracefully from an early age.

The healthy foliage of Tilia americana ‘Nova’ is particularly striking. The leaves are large, measuring ten to twenty centimeters, with an asymmetrical heart shaped base, an ovate blade with a pointed tip, and a serrated margin. In summer, the foliage is glossy dark green with a lighter green underside, while in autumn it turns yellow. An additional reason to plant this tree is its abundant flowering at a relatively young age. Flowering occurs in July, with hanging clusters of light yellow, pleasantly scented flowers. After flowering, small, light gray, elliptical nutlets develop, softly covered with felt like hairs. The bark is smooth and gray, later developing shallow fissures. The young twigs of cultivar ‘Nova’ are olive green, smooth and thick, often showing a reddish brown sheen on the sun exposed side.

American linden ‘Nova’ is an excellent tree for avenues, wide streets and parks, where its generous crown and fast growth can be fully appreciated. It performs best on moderately moist, well drained soils and prefers sites in full sun to partial shade. Although this tree is not suitable for planting in paving and is highly susceptible to aphids, Tilia americana ‘Nova’ is very winter hardy, tolerant of wind and heat, and an outstanding nectar source for bees, making it well worth planting.
