Acer campestre 'Nanum'

Acer campestre 'Nanum'

Nanum field maple

Description

Acer campestre ‘Nanum’ (‘Nanum’ Field Maple) is a selection marketed by Loudon Nurseries in England in 1839. It has a spherical shape, with a very dense crown. The tree can reach a height of 6 metres and a width of 2 to 3 metres. ‘Nanum’ is perfect for use as a sleek globe tree or trimmed block tree.

In April, the ‘Nanum’ field maple blooms quite discrete small, yellow-green corymbs. The palmate lobate leaves bud green with a red hue in April-May. In the summer, the selection bears winged brown fruit. Due to its compact shape, it is limited in how much it blooms or bears fruit. In the autumn, Acer campestre ‘Nanum’ turns a lovely golden yellow. With its dense branches, the tree is beloved among many different types of birds, who like to nest in it.

Acer campestre ‘Nanum’ can tolerate wind, heat, drought, air pollution, frost, deep shade and salt spray very well. It is a strong selection and a good climate tree. Because of its shape, the uses of the tree are somewhat limited; it is a nice tree for gardens and e.g. industrial areas. The ‘Nanum’ field maple can handle diseases relatively well to well, and is easy to maintain.
