Celzam Freeman's Maple

synonym Acer x freemanii 'CELEBRATION'

Description

Acer × freemanii 'Celzam' (Celzam Freeman's Maple), also known under the trade name Acer × freemanii 'CELEBRATION'®, is a robust hybrid maple - created from a controlled cross between Acer rubrum (red maple) and Acer saccharinum (silver maple). The cultivar was selected in 1987 by Lake County Nursery, Ohio, United States, for its excellent growth characteristics, compact form, continuous central leader and suitability for urban planting. The crown is narrow pyramidal in its younger years and later develops into a broad pyramidal or oval shape, with a closed, regular branch structure and a height of approximately ten to fifteen metres and a width of approximately six to eight metres.

The leaves of Acer × freemanii “Celzam” are palmate and most similar to those of Acer saccharinum. They are sturdy in structure, bright green in summer with a grey-green underside. In autumn, the leaves change colour strikingly from golden yellow to red. The blossoms appear around March or April as small, reddish flower clusters. An important characteristic of the tree is that Celzam Freeman's Maple produces virtually no seeds. The twigs are reddish-brown and contrast beautifully in winter with the light grey smooth bark, which becomes slightly grooved with age.

Acer × freemanii ‘Celzam’ is ideal as an avenue and street tree and is well suited to urban environments, gardens, squares and parks where shape retention, rapid growth and low maintenance are desired. The selection shows good tolerance to paving and urban stress and is highly resistant to wind. It also has few soil requirements: ‘Celzam’ is suitable for almost all well-drained soil types, with a preference for moderately nutrient-rich to nutrient-rich soils. The tree tolerates both dry and moist conditions. For optimal development and autumn colours, a location in full sun to light partial shade is recommended.
