Acer pseudoplatanus 'Bruchem'

Acer pseudoplatanus 'Bruchem'

Bruchem Sycamore, Bruchem Sycamore Maple

Description

Acer pseudoplatanus ‘Bruchem’ was discovered as a seedling of Acer pseudoplatanus in the village of Bruchem in Gelderland, the Netherlands. The selection was released in 1984 by the research station De Dorschkamp in Wageningen. This relatively slow growing cultivar develops a narrow, upright habit in its youth but gradually forms an increasingly ovate crown with a well defined central leader, ultimately reaching fifteen to twenty meters in height and ten to fifteen meters in width.

The leaves of Acer pseudoplatanus ‘Bruchem’ are five lobed, rather thick, matte green above and more blue gray underneath. The yellow green, hanging flower clusters appear in April, followed by the typical winged fruits of maple trees, known as samaras, which are approximately three to three and a half centimeters long. The twigs of ‘Bruchem’ are light brown, and the bark is gray.

Acer pseudoplatanus ‘Bruchem’ is well suited as an avenue or street tree for wider streets or green strips. Because it ultimately becomes a large, very healthy tree, it also provides excellent shade in parks. The cultivar has modest soil requirements and even tolerates relatively wet and cold soils. A location in full sun to partial shade is preferred. The sycamore maple ‘Bruchem’ is wind resistant, even in coastal areas, but somewhat sensitive to road salt.
