Acer rubrum 'Scanlon'

Acer rubrum 'Scanlon'

Scanlon Red Maple

Description

Acer rubrum ‘Scanlon’ (‘Scanlon’ red maple) was selected by American dendrologist and grower Edward H. Scanlon at Scanlon Nursery in Olmsted Falls, Ohio in 1956. The strong cultivar is very compact, with dense branches and a narrow, columnar crown. The tree grows up to 12 metres high and is rarely over four metres wide.

In March, the ‘Scanlon’ red maple blooms with small but striking red corymbs on bare wood. The lobate, palmate leaves are glossy green with a blue-green underside. In autumn, it turns gorgeous orange-red, red-violet and purple-red, creating a beautiful contrast with the smooth grey bark. The tree bears red-brown and discrete winged fruits.

The cultivar ‘Scanlon’ does not tolerate wind and therefore requires a sheltered area, preferably in sun or partial shade. This selection is best used in lanes, parks, central reservations, large gardens and cemeteries. With its high nectar and pollen value, Acer rubrum ‘Scanlon’ is a fantastic early host plant for bees and other insects. Plant the tree in nutrient-rich, loamy soil, with an acidic to neutral pH value.
