Description

Amelanchier 'Ballerina' (Ballerina serviceberry) is a beautiful vase-shaped shrub or small tree of 5 to 7 metres in height. It is a selection from 1980 by the testing station for the tree nursery in Boskoop.

The species blooms rich with large racemes of white flowers in late April to early May, right before its leaves sprout. The leaves bud bronze and green in the summer with a grey-green underside. The autumn colours are a gorgeous orange-red. The Ballerina serviceberry has a rich fruit production. The sweet berries are ripe in July and are relatively big: about 1 cm in diameter.

Amelanchier 'Ballerina' will thrive in a sunny area, somewhat sheltered from wind, in soil that is rich in nutrients, retains moisture and slightly acidic. Wet soil is not tolerated well. The small tree can be planted on streets and squares with a large drip line, but does sometimes cause problems on the pavement with its abundant fruit production.
