Amelanchier laevis 'Cumulus'

Amelanchier laevis 'Cumulus'

Cumulus allegheny serviceberry

synonym Amelanchier arborea 'Cumulus'

Description

Amelanchier laevis ‘Cumulus’ (Cumulus allegheny serviceberry) is a selection by Princeton Nurseries, New Jersey, USA, introduced in 1972. The Cumulus allegheny serviceberry grows into a narrow, upright tree about 10 metres high and 5 metres wide. It is a fast grower that does not produce root shoots.

When the leaves sprout - in early spring - the Cumulus allegheny serviceberry blooms white, fragrant racemes. In June/July comes the relatively big, edible fruit, loved by birds. The leaves bud bronze-green, are a bright dark-green in the summer and turn a bright orange-red to scarlet in autumn. In its youth, it does not bloom very abundantly; later on, the tree blooms much more bountifully.

The serviceberry requires direct sunlight or light shade. It is a species for gardens, parks and central reservations. It tolerates strong wind very well; the Amelanchier laevis ‘Cumulus’ therefore also does very well in roof gardens. Plant the tree in slightly acidic, permeable, humous and moist soil.
