Gleditsia triacanthos 'Skyline'

Gleditsia triacanthos 'Skyline'

'Skyline' thornless honeylocust

Description

Gleditsia triacanthos ‘Skyline’ (‘Skyline’ thornless honey locust) was introduced as a cultivar by D. B. Cole in North America in 1957. This nearly thornless selection differs from the main species in its narrower shape. The tree can grow up to 20 metres high, with a width of 6 to 8 metres and a beautiful transparent, egg-shaped crown. The ‘Skyline’ buds leaves much later than other Gleditsia triacanthos cultivars.

In June, Gleditsia triacanthos ‘Skyline’ blooms discreet, yellow-green racemes. The leaves are pinnate and bud a fresh shade of green. That fresh green colour lasts all summer, and turns a spectacular golden yellow in autumn. De ‘Skyline’ cultivar rarely bears fruit. In winter, the tree has a gorgeous, characteristic silhouette with whimsical branches.

Wind, dryness, air pollution, pavement, salt spray and brief wet periods are well tolerated by the Gleditsia triacanthos ‘Skyline’. The tree thrives in partial shade or sunlight, in both moist and very dry soil, with a neutral to acidic pH value. The strong cultivar is very suitable for use in urban areas. It is an excellent selection for streets, but ‘Skyline’ is also a valuable addition for roof gardens. With a nectar and pollen value of 5, bees and other insects are very strongly drawn to this tree.
