Description

Hamamelis x intermedia 'Jelena' (witch hazel ‘Jelena’) was selected from seedlings by the Kalmthout Arboretum in Belgium and named after the owner, Jelena Belder. In 1955, the shrub received a ‘Certificate of Merit’ following assessment by the Royal Horticultural Society in England. It is a particularly beautiful cultivar with a lightly fragranced, rich blossom and an open, wide, vase-shaped growth.

Hamamelis x intermedia 'Jelena' is striking thanks to the large flowers with an unusual colour. A dark red violet at the base, graduating via orange to golden yellow at the ends of the flowers. The autumn colour of this witch hazel varies from yellow and orange to red-violet, starting at the edges of the leaves, until eventually the whole leaf has a deep violet colour.

Hamamelis x intermedia 'Jelena' likes a location in the full sun or light shade, in an acidic and moist soil. The shrub thrives in all soil types, as long as the soil is nutrient rich and has good permeability. For the first year after planting, a Hamamelis must absolutely not be allowed to dry out. The ‘Jelena’ witch hazel can be pruned to a very limited extent after the blossom in March. You should mainly prune the rising shoots from the rootstock and the dead wood. If further pruning is necessary, only prune twigs that are the thickness of a pencil. In the early years, the ‘Jelena’ cultivar has few branches and the shrub is thinner than other cultivars. Later it thickens out.

Winter hardiness

A plant's winter hardiness is the coldest area in which it is frost-resistant. This is based on the average annual minimum temperature. Winter hardiness zones are thirteen different frost zones in steps of 5.5 degrees Celsius. This format is an international standard for the hardiness of plants. The zones in which the plant is frost-resistant are always included in the description of trees and other vegetation.

Winter hardiness is a genetic characteristic and is not influenced by the location in which the plant is cultivated. This means that a plant that has been cultivated for many years in winter-hardiness zone 6 but has a winter hardiness of 3 is perfectly suited for replanting in a colder zone. It will thrive there thanks to its genetic characteristics.

When choosing planting for a project, the winter hardiness of the plants is extremely important. By choosing species that match the zone in which the project is being created, it is possible to ensure that plants can withstand the minimum temperature in that area.
