Malus toringo 'Freja'

Malus toringo 'Freja'

Toringo crabapple 'Freja'

Description

Malus toringo 'Freja' (Freja toringo crabapple) is a striking cultivar of Malus toringo. Freja toringo crabapple was introduced in the late twentieth century, but its exact origin remains unclear. As a mature tree, Malus toringo 'Freja' reaches a height of four to five metres and a width of three to four metres. The semi-open crown is usually oval to spherical and slightly spreading, with broad-growing frame branches.

In spring, Malus toringo 'Freja' surprises with a rich bloom: the tree is then covered with small, delicate flowers, usually a light pink to pink hue. This bloom attracts pollinators and is therefore a valuable contribution to biodiversity. After flowering, small ornamental apples the size of berries form, which are originally green and later turn reddish-purple. These ornamental apples provide a beautiful decorative effect in autumn and are also greatly appreciated by birds. During the growing season, the leaves are shiny purple-green, ending spectacularly in autumn with mixed fiery red and orange autumn colours. The trunks of the Freja toringo crabapple are reddish-brown to grey-brown and young twigs are also red.

Malus toringo 'Freja' is ideal as a solitary ornamental tree or in groups in gardens, public green spaces and parks. Thanks to its moderate height and compact crown, it fits well in gardens with limited space, but where seasonal experience and biodiversity are desired. Malus toringo 'Freja' tolerates various soil types: from sand to loam or light clay, as long as the soil is well-drained and rich in humus. For optimal flowering and fruiting, a location in full sun to partial shade is recommended. Freja is resistant to air pollution and paving. Especially in places where a red accent is desired, this ornamental apple tree is a beautiful, biodiverse addition throughout the year.
