Pinus sylvestris 'Watereri'

Pinus sylvestris 'Watereri'

Dwarf Scots pine

synonym Pinus sylvestris var. nana

Description

Pinus sylvestris ‘Watereri’ (blue dwarf Scots pine) was found in 1865 by Anthony Waterer in the Horsell Common nature reserve near Woking, United Kingdom. The tree was introduced by Knap Hill Nursery in 1891, where the original specimen can still be found to this day. This cultivar of the Scots pine is very popular and makes an excellent and healthy tree or large (multi-stem) shrub approximately three to four metres tall and wide with an umbrella-shaped to rounded crown.  ‘Watereri’ grows very slowly and stays particularly compact.

Pinus sylvestris ‘Watereri’ is easy to identify by its blue, slightly twisted needles which are in bundles of two. The needles stay on the tree for around three to four years after which they are replaced by new ones. Young shoots are green but change to grey as they age. Typical for the Scots pine, the bark of Pinus sylvestris ‘Watereri’ is orange brown, which makes a lovely contrast with the blue needles. In older trees, the bark changes to grey brown. ‘Watereri’ has pine cones which are grey brown in colour and slightly smaller than those of the species.

Pinus sylvestris ‘Watereri’ is a lovely cultivar which is very tolerant of wind and coastal sites. The tree is very hardy and prefers a position in full sun on well-drained and drier soils. Because the selection is densely branching and grows slowly, it also makes a good bonsai tree and can be pruned to shape. The tree’s blue needles create a striking look and it is a great choice for park-like settings and gardens. But ‘Watereri’ is also ideal for containers and on roofs provided the substrate is not too alkaline.
