Prunus serrulata 'Sunset Boulevard'

Prunus serrulata 'Sunset Boulevard'

Flowering cherry 'Sunset Boulevard'

Description

Prunus serrulata ‘Sunset Boulevard’ (Flowering cherry ‘Sunset Boulevard’) is a seedling of the old Prunus serrulata ‘Benden’ cultivar and was selected by Arboretum Kalmthout in Belgium in 1988. The ‘Sunset Boulevard’ cultivar grows rapidly and can reach up to 10 metres in height. The crown stays relatively narrow with upright branches that bend outwards a bit when they are older, making a narrow, egg-shaped crown that can reach a width of up to 5 metres.

In April, the flowering cherry ‘Sunset Boulevard’ blooms large, saucer-shaped single white flowers with pink edges, in groups of two. With its high nectar and pollen value, bees are able to find the blossoms very easily. The narrow, oval leaves bud bronze, turning green in summer with typically tapered tops. Prunus serrulata ‘Sunset Boulevard’ was selected for its beautiful, striking autumn colours: orange-yellow with red leaf edges. The tree therefore has a major decorative value in autumn. Prunus serrulata ‘Sunset Boulevard’ has a chestnut brown trunk with clear lenticels.

The flowering cherry ‘Sunset Boulevard’ is exceptionally healthy and also forms a good trunk, provided it is not planted in soil that is too wet. The selection does not bear fruit, which makes the tree perfect for planting in public spaces. Another major advantage of Prunus serrulata ‘Sunset Boulevard’ is that it is quite wind-proof. For use in public locations, plant the tree in a sunny area in very permeable, nutrient-rich soil. If the planting hole is properly prepared, the tree can also be used in open pavement.
