Quercus × warei REGAL PRINCE

Quercus × warei REGAL PRINCE

REGAL PRINCE® Fastigiate oak, REGAL PRINCE® Cypress oak, REGAL PRINCE® Columnar Oak

synonym Quercus x warei 'Long'

Description

Quercus × warei REGAL PRINCE is a relatively new cultivar among columnar oaks. It is a hybrid between Quercus bicolor and Quercus robur ‘Fastigiata’ and is a sibling seedling from the same cross that produced Quercus × warei ‘Nadler’ (KINDRED SPIRIT). The original tree was found, selected and patented in 1997 by nurseryman Earl Cully on the Columbia campus of the University of Missouri in the United States. As a young tree, it grows narrowly columnar with a strong fastigiate habit and develops a stronger and fuller branching structure than many other columnar oaks. With age, the crown becomes broader and more open and eventually forms a narrow oval shape, reaching about fourteen meters in height and five to six meters in width.

The large, inversely ovate and lobed leaves are very attractive and healthy, with good resistance to powdery mildew. Because the branches grow upward at an angle, the underside of the bicolored leaves becomes especially visible. The felted, silvery underside contrasts beautifully with the glossy dark green upper surface. The young foliage emerges bronze colored and turns gold yellow to yellow brown in autumn. In winter the leaves often remain attached for a long time. Young twigs are gray brown, while the older bark becomes greenish gray and develops small rectangular furrows. The yellow male catkins appear in May at the same time as the leaves unfold. In autumn, oval acorns about two and a half centimeters long develop, half enclosed by the cup.

In the United States, Quercus × warei REGAL PRINCE is a very popular narrow street tree that tolerates road salt well. As a standard tree or feathered tree, it is also of great value in Europe for modern street tree plantings. When used as a feathered tree it can act as a barrier against wind, noise and particulate matter, helping to create a more pleasant microclimate. As a vertical design element it is also very suitable for private gardens. The REGAL PRINCE columnar oak prefers nutrient rich and moisture retentive, slightly acidic soils, but this selection is quite tolerant of most conditions. Wind is also not a problem for this tree.
