Description

Sorbus ‘Dodong’ is a selection made in 1992 at the Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences in Alnarp, where the tree was found among a batch of Sorbus commixta of Korean origin. The seed was collected in 1976 during a Swedish Danish expedition to the Korean island of Ulleungdo, and the tree was later named after the island’s main town, Dodong. Trees from this island are not classified as Sorbus commixta, which is why Sorbus ‘Dodong’ carries only a cultivar name. This selection grows to about eight to ten meters in height and four to six meters in width, with an upright, narrowly oval crown that later develops into an ovate shape.

The emergence of the large, odd pinnate, bright green foliage is a true attraction. Thick buds open to reveal the pinnate leaves, which remain glossy dark green throughout summer and turn a striking orange red in autumn. In May, Sorbus ‘Dodong’ flowers with large white clusters that attract many bees and other insects. In autumn, small pear shaped green fruits develop, which turn bright red and hang in large clusters. Birds are particularly fond of them. The bark of ‘Dodong’ is smooth and gray, and the twigs are brown, sturdy and upright.

This widely used selection is very healthy, winter hardy and easy to grow. It has few soil requirements and can also be planted on poor soils. Semi paved conditions are tolerated. Because of its upright growth habit, this rowan is well suited as a street tree in spacious planting sites or green verges. Sorbus ‘Dodong’ is also very suitable as a multi stemmed tree in containers and on rooftop gardens, and in gardens it provides year round interest whether grown as a multi stem or as a standard tree.
