Ulmus 'Lobel'

Ulmus 'Lobel'

Lobel Elm

Description

Ulmus ‘Lobel’ (Lobel elm) is the narrowest of the four third-generation elms from forestry test station De Dorschkamp in Wageningen, the Netherlands. Until late in life, the branches continue to grow vertically upwards - eventually creating an oval, densely branched crown shape that grows 15 to 18 metres tall and four to five metres wide. The Lobel elm is named after the medieval Flemish botanist and physician Matthias de Lobel: together with Dodoens and Clusius, he is part of the Flemish botanical triad. Ulmus ‘Lobel’ was released in 1973 by Dutch elm professor Hans Heybroek.

The leaf of the Lobel elm is rough and matt dark green, turning yellow in autumn and remaining on the tree for a long time. The dense clusters of pale green flowers appear in March and the flat, winged, green nuts that appear afterwards turn brown before swirling down. In young trees, the light grey bark is smooth; as the tree ages, it turns darker grey and grooves develop.

The Lobel elm is elm disease resistant, suitable for various types of soil and can withstand extremes such as (sea) wind, drought and temporary flooding. As a third generation elm, Ulmus ‘Lobel’ is also a very useful elm species in both urban and landscape settings: from streets, car parks and (busy) industrial areas to ecological zones and coastal areas.
