Description

Ulmus ‘Rebella’ (elm ‘Rebella’) is a hybrid of Ulmus parvifolia × Ulmus americana, bred in 1987 at Madison University in Wisconsin by Professor Raymond Guries as clone 2245-9. The selection combines the high resistance to Dutch elm disease and the small, glossy leaves of the Chinese elm with characteristics of the American elm. Eisele GmbH from Darmstadt acquired the European propagation rights and introduced the cultivar in 2011 within the resista® assortment. It is the smallest of the resista® elms and is expected to reach eight to twelve meters high and three to five meters wide. The graceful, loosely branched, slightly overhanging crown at the top is ovoid, semi-open, and densely covered with leaves.

The small to medium-sized, ovoid leaf is six to ten centimeters long, glossy dark green, rough, and double-serrated. The often richly variegated autumn color ranges from golden yellow and orange to orange-red or purple-red. The inconspicuous light violet to brownish flowers appear before the leaves, usually in March. Young twigs are finely branched, grayish-brown, initially hairy, and often slightly overhanging. The bark is initially smooth and silvery gray-green and later develops longitudinal grooves and a reddish-brown color.

Thanks to its limited crown size, Ulmus ‘Rebella’ is particularly suitable for narrow streets, squares, and smaller gardens, but also as an avenue, park, or solitary tree and in parking lots and industrial areas. It grows in sun to light shade on almost any moderately nutrient-rich to nutrient-rich sandy, loamy, or clay soil, from acidic to calcareous, with a preference for loose, well-drained, fresh to moist soil. After establishment, it tolerates heat very well and is suitable for use in both open and closed paving. In addition, it is highly resistant to wind and sea wind and very resistant to Ophiostoma ulmi and Ophiostoma novo-ulmi.

Winter hardiness

A plant's winter hardiness is the coldest area in which it is frost-resistant. This is based on the average annual minimum temperature. Winter hardiness zones are thirteen different frost zones in steps of 5.5 degrees Celsius. This format is an international standard for the hardiness of plants. The zones in which the plant is frost-resistant are always included in the description of trees and other vegetation.

Winter hardiness is a genetic characteristic and is not influenced by the location in which the plant is cultivated. This means that a plant that has been cultivated for many years in winter-hardiness zone 6 but has a winter hardiness of 3 is perfectly suited for replanting in a colder zone. It will thrive there thanks to its genetic characteristics.

When choosing planting for a project, the winter hardiness of the plants is extremely important. By choosing species that match the zone in which the project is being created, it is possible to ensure that plants can withstand the minimum temperature in that area.
