Acer cappadocicum 'Aureum'

Acer cappadocicum 'Aureum'

Aureum Lobel's maple

Description

Acer cappadocicum ‘Aureum’ (golden Cappadocian Maple) was introduced in 1914 by Hesse tree nurseries in Weener, Germany. The selection has the same wide egg-shaped, semi-open crown as the species but grows a lot more slowly and stays more compact. In general, the golden Cappadocian Maple grows to a maximum height of between ten and fifteen metres tall and six to nine metres wide but in England individual specimens are known to exist which are as tall as twenty metres.

The young emerging foliage on Acer cappadocicum ‘Aureum’ is violet red to purple in colour, changing later in the spring to yellow and bright green in summer. In the autumn the foliage eventually turns yellow. The 5-7 lobed leaf with its pointed leaf tips and long, thin petioles shares the same characteristic as that of the species. The yellow, upright corymbs bloom at the same time as the purple budding foliage and together form a beautiful contrast. Bees and butterflies are very attracted to them. The striking winged samaras, which subsequently appear on the tree, start off yellow-green before changing to brown. Acer cappadocicum ‘Aureum’ has a pale grey bark with white stripes and young shoots are violet brown in colour, changing to brown with white stripes lengthways as the tree matures.

The golden Cappadocian Maple thrives best in partial shade on nutrient-rich and moist soil with a low pH value. These factors together afford good protection for the foliage which is prone to scorching by the sun. The characteristic yellow leaf definitely contrasts most beautifully with a darker environment, or against a darker backdrop. Moderately wind tolerant, the selection, therefore, prefers a site that is not too exposed. Acer cappadocicum ‘Aureum’ is perfect for parks and gardens where its yellow glowing foliage and elegant tree shape make it the ideal choice as a standard or multi-stem.
