Acer campestre 'Elsrijk'

Acer campestre 'Elsrijk'

Elsrijk field maple

Description

Acer campestre ‘Elsrijk’ (‘Elsrijk’ field maple) is a very well-known Dutch street tree. The selection was marketed in 1953 by C.P. Broerse, a municipal nursery in Amstelveen, the Netherlands. The tree can reach a height of 8 to 12 metres and a width of 7 to 8 metres. The crown is wide egg-shaped and dense. Characteristic of this species is the many different topiary options.

In May, ‘Elsrijk’ field maples bloom discrete, yellow-green flowers. Bees and butterflies love these then, because of their high nectar and pollen values. The palmate, lobate leaves bud a yellow-green and then turn dark green. From August onwards, the tree bears its characteristic winged, brown-green fruit. Acer campestre ‘Elsrijk’ turns a lovely yellow-orange in the autumn. This makes for a beautiful contrast with its grey-brown bark.

The ‘Elsrijk’ cultivar can tolerate heat and drought very well, as well as strong (coastal) winds and air pollution. These aspects and the 5A winterhardiness make the tree perfect for climate planting. ‘Elsrijk’ can be used in many ways in streets, avenues and squares, but also along the coast, in industrial areas, roof gardens and containers or used as a windbreak. The selection has few requirements for its environment. Preferably plant Acer campestre ‘Elsrijk’ in moist to wet soil, with a neutral to acidic pH value.
