Tilia heterophylla 'Prestige'

Tilia heterophylla 'Prestige'

Beetree linden 'Prestige', White basswood 'Prestige'

synonym Tilia heterophylla 'Continental Appeal'

Description

Tilia heterophylla ‘Prestige’ was selected in 1975 by the nursery Willet N. Wandell in Urbana, Illinois, United States, and is also known under its original name ‘Continental Appeal’. Its origin is unclear. The tree is considered a cultivar of Tilia americana, of which Tilia americana var. heterophylla (white basswood) is a southern variant characterized by very large leaves with a white, hairy underside. ‘Prestige’ is a vigorous-growing lime with a narrow, egg-shaped crown, reaching approximately twelve to fifteen meters in height and only about five to six meters in width. The crown is semi-open, but appears quite dense due to the large foliage.

The striking leaves, as mentioned, are very large, broadly oval with a heart-shaped base, finely serrated margins, and a pointed tip, glossy dark green on the upper surface and white-felted on the underside. In July, creamy yellow, fragrant flower clusters appear, which are rich in nectar and pollen. These are followed by brown, egg-shaped fruits covered with felt-like hairs. The young shoots of cultivar ‘Prestige’ are initially green and later turn red, while the mature bark is dark brown and furrowed.

Tilia heterophylla ‘Prestige’ is extremely suitable for avenue and street plantings in urban environments. This is due to its narrow crown, tolerance of paved conditions, and wind resistance. It grows well on all well-drained, nutrient-rich soil types. Thanks to its abundant flowering in July, the tree is highly attractive to bees and butterflies and is not susceptible to aphids. Tilia heterophylla ‘Prestige’ is clearly recognizable as a lime tree, but the large leaves that turn in the wind to reveal their silvery-white undersides give the tree an extra ornamental quality, especially in gardens and parks.
