Platanus x hispanica 'Malburg'

Platanus x hispanica 'Malburg'

Malburg Maple-leaved Plane

synonym Platanus x acerifolia 'Malburg'

Description

Platanus x hispanica ‘Malburg’ (Malburg Maple-leaved Plane, synonym: Platanus x acerifolia ‘Malburg’) was selected by the National Plant Protection Organization of the Netherlands from an avenue in the Dutch city of Huissen in 1981 - just like the ‘Huissen’ selection - when it stood out due to its small habit. The fast-growing street tree selection can reach heights of up to 30 metres, and is just a little wider than the ‘Huissen’ cultivar with its 18 metres in width and has a more transparent, oval crown.

In May, the Malburg maple-leaved plane blooms discrete, spherical, yellow-green flower heads. The large, palmate lobate leaves bud relatively late. In late April, early May, the bright green leaves appear, with a slightly hairy underside. In autumn, the foliage turns brown-yellow to yellow and brown nuts appear in pairs of two. The spiky fruit stays on the tree until deep into winter, sometimes even until spring. Platanus x hispanica ‘Malburg’ also has the beautiful, characteristic plane bark that peels off.

The Malburg maple-leaved plane can withstand heat, drought and brief wet periods. It can also handle heavy pruning and highly urbanised environments such as air pollution and salt spray very well. The tree is quite wind-proof, but can become slanted in open areas and is thus most suitable for planting in an urban environment. The ‘Malburg’ cultivar is a perfect tree for streets and avenues, but can also be used on somewhat sheltered squares, in parks and in large gardens. Platanus x hispanica ‘Malburg’ grows in practically all types of soil and prefers a light environment. The selection has a deep, densely branched root system and anchors the tree better than the main species. Its strong roots are even able to push the pavement; therefore, we recommend properly improving the underground habitat.
