Unit.city main plaza is a combined project for living, working and recreation. This project in Kiev is part of a large-scale urban renewal initiative. It is a so-called smart city that prioritises promising start-ups and all kinds of innovative technological developments. Located in the heart of the Unit.city district, this main square is designed to enhance the overall urban experience, promote community engagement and create a sense of identity with the place. The unique design is aimed at allowing people to meet each other, but also to avoid each other. This is made possible by opting for “affordable” greenery and

not going for dense green zones. Users can choose to use the space as a park, to relax among the greenery, but also as a functional connection to get from A to B. All of this touches on the essence of landscape architecture: designing environments that stimulate human connection on different levels.

The execution of the design is characterised by strong details, carefully considered materials and the use of colour. It is also striking that both the furniture and the natural elements, such as the boulders, have been given a very logical place within the design. Nothing seems to stand in the way, nothing seems superfluous, and the overall picture creates a connection with the location. The stone staircase resembles a slope, subtly interrupted by islands of greenery. The carefully chosen seating areas make it possible to really connect with the greenery. The choice of large multi-stemmed trees has immediately given Unit.City its own identity. Since the completion of the project, it feels spacious and rich. The proportions of the planting complement the façades of the surrounding buildings beautifully. By opting for a contrasting planting plan in both form and colour, the greenery plays a prominent role. The paths and seating areas cater to different needs, encourage encounters and enable people to easily discover and enjoy the place.
