Trees use a lot of water during the growing season: for leaf development, nutrient transport, cooling and growth. After being dug up at the nursery, the roots are partially cut, which means a newly planted tree needs extra care and water for the first 2–3 years.
The first growing season after planting is the most critical. Watering must be carried out weekly in the correct quantity. In the second year, the amount of water can be reduced by about a third, provided the tree is developing well. Watch out for signs of drought stress, such as drooping or yellow leaves and leaf drop. This means the tree is lacking moisture and needs watering immediately. After about three growing seasons, the tree is fully established and can usually grow without extra water.
